Good morning Room 108!
I hope that you have been having a wonderful weekend! This past week was very exciting for us! We learned how to add more details and informational facts to our non fiction writing. We are continuing to push ourselves in reading by asking WH questions and using text evidence to help us find the answer. This week we also started our new math curriculum, Bridges, and learned about steps and leaps (different ways to skip count when adding), and how to use an open vs. a closed number line! The most exciting parts of our week though were MAP testing and Celebrations Around the World. Your students did wonderful on their MAP tests and I am so proud of their hard work! They should be celebrating their growth and success in completing MAP test for a second time! For celebrations around the world, we visited Asia, Europe and Africa! This will be our last week traveling and we will be having an all second grade celebration together! We will be sharing our research on different countries and ending it with a surprise! We have a story teller, Anne Shimojima - a past librarian from Braeside, come and share stories from some of the places we visited! It is going to be a wonderful last week before break! Looking forward to all the exciting activities ahead! Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Hello Room 108 Families! I apologize for the late update for the week! Since coming back from Thanksgiving break we have had begun our big unit study on Celebrations Around The World! For social studies this month, we are traveling to the different continents and learning about how different countries celebrate the holidays. We have made our first stop in Asia learning about Japan and their celebration of Kamakura and China, the Chinese New Year! We have also been doing research on some of the countries that we have visited. We will be creating posters and as a second grade share together the different things we have learned at the end of the unit! In math, we have recently begun the Bridges curriculum. It is a slow roll out and will be in full swing when we come back from winter break! What we have been studying in math so far has correlated nicely with where we are beginning bridges. We are in Unit 3 looking at different ways to add and subtract and using bundles, open and closed number lines. In writing we have begun writing our non fiction stories! Students will be writing how to stories, or something that they are an expert on! As for reading, we are learning how to ask WH questions (who, what, where, when, why and how) to look for important information in informational text. As well as looking for text evidence to support our answers from the text! Most importantly, we will be MAP testing tomorrow and Thursday (December 6, and 7th). Reading will be on Wednesday, and we will be doing math on Thursday. Please make sure that your students are well rested and have a healthy breakfast before they come to school. Please remember that MAP testing is a way to track your students growth and to have data on how they are doing. If you would like to discuss this with your students, please remind them that this is to show how much they have learned this year, and that it is important that they take their time to show their best work. This is not a timed test, and they will be provided as much time as they need and to use all of the resources that are available to them! I know that they will be very successful! As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask! Have a wonderful rest of the week! |
