Hi Room 115 Families!
I hope that you are enjoying a wonderful long weekend and for those of you celebrating the holiday a happy new year! We had a busy week of learning letters, sounds and writing words. We began doing some rhyming and thinking about what letters and sounds make up words. In math we continued to look at the sequence of numbers and their values. A great activity to do at home is to have your students counting anything and everything around. Whether it is a number of grapes that they can have, the cans from the grocery store, legos they used to build, etc. This is a great way to continue their number fluency and seeing what the value of each number looks like. In social studies we looked at different community helpers. We talked about the type of people we see, what their jobs are and their importance. We did this through researching on the app Epic! Your students looked at books, listened to them and read the pictures and then drew pictures about what they learned! Last week we had our first bus drill. Your students did a wonderful job of listening and learning about what it looks like, feels like and sounds like during an emergency on the bus. We practiced exiting the bus and learning about the different emergency doors to exit from. This Thursday we will be having our first fire drill. Prior to the drill we will talk about what it looks like to leave the building and where we go. For you to know, if there was really a fire, we would leave through the door near the courtyard and move go to the black top near the red spiderweb. We will talk about what we do if we weren't with the class, in the bathroom etc. As I shared last week with you, there will be no secrets about when things are happening so that if you would like to talk to your students about it you can. Finally, MAP reports are out! Please remember that these assessments were taken in the first week of school. This is before your students had experience taking a test, using the iPads, listening to directions or have practice reading and doing math. The purpose of these assessments were to get them done and have some sort of baseline on them. I look at the MAP assessments to see how your students did, but I do not use it as the tool that shares with me how to support them. It is just one of the many points that make up their educational experience. This week we will be beginning student success block. This will be a block of thirty minutes everyday that your students may be working with different teachers or students in kindergarten to have instruction that is designed for them. This is to benefit them and give them a double dose of reading, math or a specific skill that needs practice. Important Information 1. The Fun(d) Run is this Saturday! There is still time to sign up if you are interested 2. There is No School next Wednesday, October 9th 3. There is No School on Monday October 14th I know there was a lot of information in this email, so if you have any questions about anything please do not hesitate to reach out and ask!

Good Morning Room 115!
I hope that you had a wonderful weekend! We had an incredible end to last week! In class we started sounding out and writing our words with the letters we know. Each student has been practicing with the combination of S,A,T,I,P to make two and three letter words. This week we will learn the letter N and continue practicing writing words, sorting rhyming words and working on letter sounds. In math we finished our counting collections of numbers up to 20. This week we will be making number lines and practice writing the numbers and identifying the values of number up to 20. This week we will be beginning to study community. Your students will have the opportunity to learn how to do research on different community aspects through books, take notes and develop their own mini communities. This will be used to connect what they know about Highland Park and where we live out to the rest of the world. I wanted to share a friendly reminder as well, now that the weather is starting to change, please remember to send your students in clothes that they can zip, snap or buckle themselves to stay warm and dry. They are more than welcome to leave an extra jacket on their hook. We will continue to play outside rain or shine! Important Information: 1. This Friday (the 27th) is early dismissal! Please make your student knows how they are going home on this day 2. There is NO SCHOOL on Monday the 30th, to those of you celebrating the holiday I hope that you have a good holiday 3. Please sign up for the Fun(D) run on October 5th! 4. FYI: Please know that I recognize at this day in age it can be scary for you or your children to hear about safety drills that are coming. I know that there is an ALICE training meeting come up for you to attend. I want to be as transparent with you as I can about these things in case your students come home and ask questions. We do have a bus drill this Thursday. This is just to show the students in case of an emergency, this is how you get off the bus safely. I will make sure to give you as much notice as I can about drills so that you are in the know if your student is to ask you any questions about them. Most importantly, please know we are all trained here at Braeside in case of any emergency and that your child's safety is of the utmost importance to me. It will be a busy but wonderful week and I look forward to what we have ahead! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions! Hi Room 115!
I hope that you have had a wonderful weekend! Can you believe that we have officially completed our first month of kindergarten! We have had an incredible week of learning our beginning letters and sounds. We are also starting to figure out how to make words from the combination of letters that we have (S, A, T, I). In math we are continuing to work on 1-1 counting to 20 and writing the numbers. We are focusing on learning the value of each number. We also worked on sorting and counting by 10. In science we are working on making observations and how to write them down in our science notebooks. This week we will continue to learn the letters P and N. We will also begin working on creating words with these and work on reading and writing them. We will also begin identifying the beginning, middle and end. In math we will continue our work from last week along with finding different ways to add up to 10! And so much more! Important Information: 1. This Wednesday, September 18th, is Picture day - please make sure that you send in your picture day forms or sign up for it online! 2. Please sign up for the Fun(d) Run on October 5th! If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask! I am looking forward to a great week!! Hi Room 115!
I hope that you have been having a wonderful weekend! We had a great week and really began diving into some of our academics. This week, we began learning some of our letters and sounds! We learned the letter S and A. You will notice that each time a letter is learned there will be a video sent to SeeSaw that can be watched and practiced at home! We also continued to focus on the characters in a story and thinking about where the setting of the story is. In math, we continued to work on 1 to 1 counting and different ways we can count. This included the different combinations of ways we can add numbers together. Such as 2 + 3 is 5 but 1 + 4 is also 5! We are working on using counters, fingers and pictures to help identify the value of the numbers and their sequence. In science we are continuing to look at different observations of the insects that we have found. We are connecting the insects or animals that we find to social studies and learning about what things we can find in our community. We will be beginning our first social studies unit soon that matches that based on learning about our community members and what a community really is. Communication: Please make sure that your student is bringing their take home folder to school everyday. This is the next best way to get information from me daily along with you sending in daily notes. In your students folder you will see the picture day form, Scholastic book information and your student's work. If you have information for me you can send a note in your students folder and I will then receive it first thing in the morning so that I am aware of any updates or changes because I do not always have time to check my email throughout the day! Thank you already for your great communication and openness! I am so glad to have all of your partnership. Important Updates: 1. This Friday is Early Release, please make sure that your child knows where they are going and that they are aware there is a change! 2. The district FunD Run is coming up! It will take place on Saturday October 5th! This is a great way to get involved and support our District. If you would liek to sign up click HERE for the link 3. Picture day is right around the corner! It will be September 18th - you will find a picture form in your students folder. You can either sign up online or send in the picture day form 4. Scholastic book forms are due this Friday if you are interested in ordering books this month. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions! Thanks for such a wonderful start to the school year and looking forward to another great week! Hi Room 115 families!
I hope you are enjoying your long weekend! We had a great week 2 and it was wonderful seeing so many of you at open house! Last week we continued to build our classroom community by creating class expectations and routines by thinking about what it should look like, sound like and feel like as we learn. We practiced writing our numbers and doing 1:1 counting. In literacy, we started talking about the different characters in a story. We also had the opportunity to practice reading with our iPads. We started to talk about balance and the importance it is that we don’t use just technology and just books, but as learners we need to use both to be successful. We practiced reading on our iPads with the app Epic!, along with exploring the books in our classroom library. The other experience and practice we had on the iPads was MAP testing. For those of you who don’t know, MAP testing is a standardized test that allows us to start collecting data on your student to watch their growth in reading and math. While hearing "standardized testing" may sound scary, in Kindergarten it serves an entirely different purpose. Please know the goal in kindergarten is to learn how to take an assessment and complete it. This is just one of the many assessments that we use to document data on your students and to use not in Kindergarten but throughout their time here at Braeside. I explain the test to your students as a "show me what you know". The students are showing me what they know from the test and I use the data to differentiate for each of your students on what I will be teaching them this year. While it was a new experience for everyone, we had no tears, lots of wanting to know how much longer it would take (haha!) but an incredibly positive attitude of wanting to show our best work. I am really proud of your students for accepting this big challenge and doing their best work. If you have any further questions on MAP testing please do not hesitate to ask. This week in class we will be learning different ways to count numbers and create them. In literacy we will continue to look at the different characters in a book and what their roles are. We will also begin learning letters this week! You will see the different videos and items in SeeSaw. If you have not joined SeeSaw please let me know and I can send home a new code for you to join our class. As a reminder, SeeSaw is your digital portfolio of work that your students or I will add to. It allows you to listen, comment and see what your student is learning and the growth they will have all year long. It will also be a way for them to rewatch videos or lessons we learn in class that I will be sharing out. Some examples of this that you may have seen already is our number song and Growth Mindset videos. |
