I hope that you have been having a wonderful week back from Thanksgiving! I just wanted to check in and give you the updates for this week.
On Monday I sent home a reading comprehension sentence starter sheet. These are some of the sentence starters that we use in class while talking about different text. This is a great resource to use when your students are reading to you, or to themselves to make sure they are understanding what they are learning. You will also notice there is a difference on the homework menu. As a second grade team, we have taken off 30 minutes from reading and have donated it to a word study section on homework. In class students have been using paper and pencil activities, word sorting, and word games to practice the pattern and spelling of words. In class we also use the program Spelling City on the computer. This is a program with a different variety of spelling, and word pattern games. Students have been working on this program all year and know how to navigate the website. We are encouraging at least 30 minutes a week to continue the practice of this study. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask! Also, there is early release this Friday, December 2, at 1 pm!

We had an incredible week! On Tuesday we met our 4th grade buddies from Mrs. Lieberman's classroom. We celebrated their final writing pieces and played a game together. On Wednesday we continued learning about deductive thinking and reasoning with Mrs. Ozawa. We explored folk tales and learned about the central message of the story, as well as learning about liquids and how they move.
Remember that conferences are next week on Monday and Tuesday! Enjoy your week, and have a wonderful thanksgiving! School Update: Character Crusaders will hold their Holiday Dollar Drive from Monday, November 28-Friday, December 2. The money earned will be donated to the Phyllis Santullano Holiday Gift Drive hosted by the Moraine Township. The Holiday Dollar Drive will only run for one week! Please consider having your child earn a dollar at home, and have them be able to tell their teacher how they earned their donation. Thank you in advance for your support of this great cause! I hope that you had a wonderful long weekend! This week we will begin our new writing unit of study, Informational: How To Writing! We will also continue studying liquids, new ways to add and subtract; such as using a ten frame and part part whole. Please encourage your students to look at and try out all of the different math websites because they provide different skills and practice for the students to work on. Or, have your student create their own problems to share and explain with you! One of our goals as a class is to continue our practice and growth on explaining how we come up with our solutions!
This week is a normal full week at school, our last one before conferences. Please let me know if you need to make any changes to your conference time, and I will do the best to reschedule you if need be! Good evening 109 Families!
Tonight I sent home an optional reading log for students to fill out throughout the week. Filling out a reading log is something that we have discussed and do in class, all students have been very successful and have enjoyed charting their reading so I wanted to give them that option at home. Also, conferences are just around the corner! This week I will be sending home reminder slips of the date and time that you have signed up for. Please let me know if for some reason that time then does not work anymore. Looking forward to seeing you at conferences! I hope that you are having a wonderful weekend! This week we had a fantastic Halloween party which included a mummy wrap, puzzle challenge, learning about the organs, and a spooky story! We celebrated the cubs winning the world series, along with some of our own big celebrations of finishing our narrative writing unit! Our next writing unit will be informational writing all about the "how to". Students will be learning how to do some research becoming the expert on a topic and writing about it. We also have moved on to liquids in science completing the solids portion of our science unit. Reminder, this Friday, November 11th, we do not have school because of Veteran's day. Looking forward to another fantastic week! |
