Hi Room 115!
I hope that you were able to enjoy the weekend despite the winter weather! We had a very exciting last week with two guest speakers. Our first guest was Donna Washington. She is a storyteller from Boston who shares stories from all over the world. Our other visitor was David Biedrzyki. He is an author and illustrator, who taught us all about how to publish a book and how he creates his stories. In class, we started working on our next math project. We are working with Miss Smith's class on creating ten frame trains with different numbers of passengers. Each type of train car has a different number of passengers and students have to determine how many of each train car they will need. This has also been a great opportunity for students to learn how to work together and problem solve. In reading we are working on different word sorts and looking at how we build words words. In reading groups we are working on discussing the main idea of the story. We are thinking about what the characters actions are and how they help us to figure out the main idea. We have also begun writing workshop. During this time we are learning how to write true stories. To do this we are learning how to brainstorm a story, tell it across our fingers, draw and write it. This week we are going to focus on how to edit the stories and add more detail to our writing and pictures. In science, we are going to begin our plant research. Otherwise, this is a regular week and I am excited to have us back into routine! If you have any questions, as always please do not hesitate to reach out!

Hi Room 115!!
I hope that you have been having a good week so far! We have been having a wonderful week filled with new projects and learning assemblies. This week we partnered with Miss Smith's class for a math project. We had the opportunity to learn how to estimate, measure, compare numbers and next week we will be graphing. The goal of your students was to build different towers for a train and figure out what the farthest measurement would be. Your students compared different heights and lengths and learned how to use inches. We also incorporated this into science and discussed the different steps of the scientific method and how to create turn that into math experiment. In literacy we have been continuing to learn different blends and word patterns. We are also continuing to work in small reading groups learning how to use the "chunking" strategy. For example, when we see a word like "become" can identify chunks that we recognize such as "be" and then we also see the word "come" students can then blend those two chunks together to make the word become. This is a great strategy that your students can work on when reading with you! We also had the disability awareness assembly on Monday. We had the opportunity to listen to the speaker Mary Kate Callahan talk with us about what it is like in her life and what makes her the same and different than ourselves. Watch out for her as she is training for the Paralympic games of 2020 for track! This lesson continued to a small group lesson where we read the book It's Okay to be Different by Todd Parr. Students then had the opportunity to compare foods they like, hair color, activities and more. This allowed us to celebrate ourselves along with the similarities and differences of our classmates. Next week is another exciting week because we have two more storytellers coming to Braeside. On Wednesday, the 24th, we have a storyteller visiting. While on Thursday the 25th, we have our author visit. Important reminders: 1. Tomorrow is early release at 1pm 2. There is no school Friday the 19 or Monday the 22nd Hi Room 115 Families!
I hope that you have had a wonderful weekend and that you enjoyed your time on spring break! We had a great week back last week and it's hard to believe that we are now in the last trimester of the year! In math we have started to work on word problems. Your students are learning how to figure out whether they need to add or subtract within the problem and what numbers they need to use to solve it. We are also going to begin looking at different measurements. In class we will be studying length, weight, capacity and temperature. In literacy, we are continuing to work on reading strategies along with learning different blends and digraphs. As your students continue to write at home, make sure they are listening to each sound as they write and use their brave spelling. We will also be incorporating some science within our literacy and study plants and different flowers. This research will be used later in science as we learn about what the life cycle of a plant. Currently in science we have started our "Not a Tube" project! We are learning how to be engineers and plan, create and engage with the different experimental processes it takes to make something. This week is exciting because we have a storyteller coming to kindergarten to share stories from around the world with us. We will also have the opportunity to go to the used book sale! I will give you advance notice to let you know what day we will be visiting it this week. Other important information: - Disability awareness is next week - we will have the opportunity to learn about different types of people and how we are alike and different - There is early release on the 18th - No school on the 19th and 22nd - If you would like to purchase a book from our visiting author that is due this week on April 11th |
