Hi Room 109 Families!!
I hope that you are enjoying the weekend! In this past short week we ended our friendship and love month study, began studying mystery novels, explored river rocks and began our telling time math unit! This month our classroom is going to embark on a new adventure called genius hour. It was developed in Google where Google employees had the opportunity to take something they knew about and wanted to learn more and develop their own product and invention based off of this inquiry. I will be showing this video to students this week to get them ready and start preparing. This is an inquiry based research project that I will be having the students engage in for the month! I am very excited for the students to learn how to research, and create something that they want to learn more about. Not only that, but since March is the month of Dr. Seuss, our next cross curricular category will be about contributors, poems and positivity. We will be taking the time to incorporate this as our next field of study within literacy, writing (we will begin our poetry writing unit on Tuesday) and positivity throughout our school and community. We are looking forward to our next second grade theme of study!

I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather on this long weekend! We had a wonderful week filled with activities from our Valentine's Day Party on Tuesday, our Friendship meeting and activities on Wednesday, our beginning to study about Genius Hour and thinking skills on Thursday and then early release on Friday! Our week was filled with critical thinking, opinion writing, friendship building and more!
In this short week will be ending our study of Friendship & Love month with an activity on Wednesday to close this unit with both second grade classes. We will continue our study of rocks, silt and sand and what happens as they begin to wear down. We will also begin taking a closer look into Genius Hour and preparing and planning what we will need for this inquiry based project. I will be sharing with you more about with this is later this week! Hello 109 Families!
I hope that you have been enjoying a relaxing weekend! We could not have asked for a better Friday to celebrate the 100th day of school! We retold fairy tales using felt boards, we wrote birthday cards to ourselves for what we hope to have accomplished by the time we are 100. We spent time with Mrs. Orloff and Mrs. Prestinarios class making heart chains. We also enjoyed our ice cream sundae party that the students earned with their paws. Upcoming this week we will be beginning our telling time unit. We will continue to work on opinion letter writing, as well as comparing and contrasting fairy tales and digging deeper to describe the character traits. Please, please, please remember that if you have not emailed me or sent in your Valentine's Day Letter for your student you do that by Tuesday morning! Looking forward to another fantastic week! Do not forget that there is early dismissal on Friday! I hope that you are off to a great weekend, and ready for the super bowl! This week was our kickoff to to international friendship week! We started with reading the books Beekle and Chester's Way. As a class we determined what character traits make a good friend and how we can be a good friend to the people in our lives. We also talked about ways we can pay it forward. We discussed random acts of kindness and how could we find ways to help out in our own community. We then partnered with Mrs. Prestinario's class and Mrs. Orloff's class in two class activities that allowed the second graders to interview a classmate from another class and discuss what kind of friend they want to be. Every Wednesday we will be exploring another topic of friendship as a whole second grade. The rest of the week we explored line plots learning about how to make our own line plot, read data, create a topic and collect our own data to plot. We focused on adding evidence to our opinion writing letters. We also had the pleasure of seeing our 4th grade buddies this week! The 4th graders had worked hard on researching different topics from the American Revolution and presented their work to us. Moving forward, we have a lot to come in the next couple of the weeks. Valentines day is just around the corner! Attached this email is a copy of the class list. Please remember that if your student is going to bring in Valentines to share with the class that there is one for each student. Also, as we look into the topic of love and friendship this month, we ask that each parent write their student a letter that they can open up on Valentines day. We want to share with the students how to share affectionate and care in appropriate manners as well as what it feels like when we receive love from someone. This will be a surprise to the students, so please do not tell them! Please send your letter in an envelope the latest February 13th! Thank you so much for helping take part in this months celebration! |
