I hope you had a wonderful weekend and a great start to the week! Last week was a busy week for us! We completed the CoGAT testing, completed the research for our Genius Hour projects, practiced 3 digit adding and subtracting, developed our own board games with our 4th grade buddies, created silt and more! As we move into this week we are continuing to look at how our world affects our communities as they grow and change. We are completing our unit on contributors and Dr. Seuss, but will be ending our poetry unit when we come back from Spring Break. With spring break around the corner, we do have early dismissal on Friday. Friday we will be sharing our Genius Hour Projects as well as attending the staff and 5th grade volleyball game! It will be a fun and fast week! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask!

I hope that you have had a wonderful weekend! This week we researched and started creating our final product for genius hour. We started adding and subtracting with 2 to 3 digit numbers, as well as taking a closer look at word problems and learning how to pick out the most important information. In poetry we learned about how to pick precise words so that our reader can visualize what we are sharing in our poem. We studied San Fransisco in social studies and the major changes the state went through as it evolved and went through natural disasters. Finally in literacy we are finishing up our mystery book unit! As you know CoGAT is this week. Mr. Hailpern sent out a letter explaining what it was. I wanted to just let you know that we will be taking the CoGAT on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:50-9:50, and 12:50-1:20. Please make sure that your students will be on time for school so that we can begin right away! If for some reason you know your student will be missing one of these times please let me know so I can find a time to reschedule their testing. Please remind your students this is nothing for them to be stressed out about or feel anxious about. I did send home a practice sheet of analogies for the students if they wanted to practice, but it was not required. Finally! Braeside is collecting unopened boxes of cereal to donate to Moraine Township. Please place them in the bins located near the gym, and the last day to donate is Friday, March 24th. For more information, please visit the PTO website. Hope that you have been enjoying your weekend! Just wanted to give you a quick update! We had our kickoff this week for our March study of contributors and Dr. Seuss poetry! We started on Wednesday with taking a closer look at who Dr. Seuss and a rhyming words activities. We completed the kickoff on Friday with Mrs. Wright. She shared more about who Dr. Seuss is and the books he wrote. We also read his very first book, To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street. We are moving into our next math unit. We will be going back into multi-digit addition and subtraction, graphing and more! In science, we will be looking at weathering rocks and how water affects land formations. As for writing, we will be looking at different ways to write a poem and how to write a haiku! Finally, in genius hour we will be beginning our research!!
I am excited to announce that our very first day of Genius Hour was a success! I hope that your students are as excited as I am about this project. I wanted to share a little bit more with you of what the students will be doing and what the expectations are.
Our schedule looks like this: Every Thursday in March we will spend 1 hour working on our project. Genius Hour allows students to take something they are passionate about and want to know more about and have the opportunity to research it and create a presentation to teach others about what they are interested in. During this time students will learn how to plan, organize and prepare research and information to create it into a presentation of their choice. Students can and are encouraged to do some research at home, but will have more than enough time to do so in class. Here is a closer look as to what we will be doing. Day 1: Plan and Prep - students chose their topics and drafted a plan of what they think they will need and how they will organize their research and materials Day 2 - Research - while some students began their research today, I will formally show students how to look up the questions they have on their topics and choose reliable resources. We will be using KidRex as our search engine. This is a student friendly search engine that will filter only appropriate websites, images and videos. Students know they can use Google at home, as long as they have your permission. Day 3 - Finish any research they might still have and begin creating their final product. I will provide the students with posters, paint, markers, glue, tape, and anything they may need printed. That being said please know you are not required or encouraged to go out and spend money on anything extra. That is all choice and something that the class and I have discussed. I want them to be able to bring their ideas to life but not have to worry and feel that they need to go over and beyond with outside materials. Students know they can also create a power point slide show, a Prezi, a poster, or even a video! Day 4 - Students will finish their presentations Friday before spring break students will be able to share and present them to the class. Our class website has a Genius Hour page now (almost completed with all of the resources) for the students to use if they want to work on it at home. I am so excited to see the students passions and hard work to come to life! If you have any further questions about it please do not hesitate to ask! |
