Hello Room 108 Families!
How is tomorrow October 1st! I cannot believe that we have officially completed our first full month at school. We have lots of exciting events coming up in October and I am looking forward to learning and celebrating with your students! This past week in science we explored how towers are made and the properties of what makes a good tower. In social studies we finished our first chapter about our community. We will begin chapter two, and take the next step into learning about our community and how it works. In math we have taken the next aspect to place value and have begun comparing numbers. We are using our place value language to help to determine what makes one number greater than another. In literacy, this will be our last week specifically summarizing what happens in the beginning, middle and end of a story. We will soon be determining the major event in a story and the characters responses. Finally, in writing, we have been look at mentor texts (Owl Moon by Jane Yolen) to learn how to make craft moves to make our own writing stronger. We have learned how to zoom in to details and stretch them out. We have also discovered that we can use our five senses in writing to help our readers feel like they are part of our story. Next week is an exciting week! We have National Bike/Walk to school day on Wednesday, October 4th. We have early release at 1pm on Friday the 6th. In class we will be digging deeper in our writing and starting to finalize one of our favorite stories for publication. We will begin looking at liquids and their properties and compare them to those of solids in science. We have continued in our handwriting curriculum and will be working on the formation of lowercase letters. And so much more! Here is also a note from the Character Crusaders: The Braeside Character Crusaders are holding a dollar drive to raise money for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma relief efforts. Please consider having your child earn a dollar at home, and they can bring it to school to donate. Paper dollars are preferred, and donating is optional. Students who donate will write their name on a paper heart, and we will hang them in the front of the school. The drive will run through Friday, October 6th, and thank you for your support! Have a wonderful weekend, and to those of you celebrating the holiday have a safe fast!

Hello Room 108 Families!
I hope that you have been enjoying the warm weather this weekend! Please know that tomorrow will be just as hot and to send students in with a water bottle! We did have extra water bottles to provide to all students who needed them, but I want to make sure that the students are hydrated and as comfortable as they can be in the classroom. Besides for our hot day on Friday, we had a wonderful week! We worked on our handwriting in our handwriting curriculum. We dug deeper into what makes a community successful. We looked at places where people work, play, and live and what the importance of this is in a community. In science we began connecting our knowledge about solids to our states of matter and exploring properties of liquids and gases. This week in math we will be taking our place value skills and using it to help compare numbers as well as looking at how this helps us add and subtract. In reading we have been working on looking at the beginning, middle and end of a story and how to summarize the story. This week we do have picture day on Wednesday September 27! Please make sure if you have not ordered your picture day forms online that you send in the forms. If you need a new form they are located in the office. I look forward to another wonderful week! Hello Room 108 Families,
I hope that you are having a wonderful weekend! We had another great week! We explored powerful endings in writers workshop. We looked through mentor texts to determine how authors use their five senses to help the readers envision what they want to share. In math we explored place value and expanded notation. We began both social studies and science! In science we defined properties of solids, and in social studies we started exploring what makes a community and what we have here in Highland Park! We also celebrated Dot Day on Friday! Dot Day is when we take the time to celebrate ourselves and our accomplishments and think about how we want to make our mark in the world. We discussed what it means to have a growth mindset, be brave and turn a mistake or a negative moment into a learning moment where we can learn how to find success. Students took the time to think about how they can make their mark and feel good about what they have accomplished so far in second grade and where they want to continue to grow! This week we will be exploring visualization in reading and how we can also incorporate that into our writing! In math we will continue taking a deeper look into place value and how it will help us with addition. Please remember we also do not have school on Thursday due to the religious holiday! Please make sure your students are remembering to bring their assignment notebooks and purple folders to school everyday. This is where they will continue to record their homework and other assignments. A couple people had questions on second step. This is our social emotional curriculum where students learn different skills to help them be successful in class and in their friendships. The worksheets sent home are to help them practice and see how the skills they are learning in class also connect to their everyday life! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask! Have a wonderful rest of your weekend! Hello Room 108 Families!
I hope that you are having a wonderful start to the weekend! We had a wonderful short week from finishing MAP testing, starting our math tasks with place value, and beginning to learn about some of our reading strategies. In math we looked at how to bundle numbers and different ways to add. The students drove this by coming up with their own questions that we then came up with multiple solutions to solve them. In reading we learned about retelling a story, summarizing, main idea, beginning, middle and end. Next week we will begin visualization and the message of the story. We will also officially begin our first science unit looking at solids and liquids, and social studies with who we are in our community! New things for this week! Students have received their assignment notebooks. Each day we will be writing in what homework we have in it. This is also a good means of communication for us. I will check them everyday and make sure the students are recording in them as well as if you have written a note to me. Please make sure you still send in a note if a student is going home with someone else or not taking the bus. We also have sent home our very first reading log. This will go home every Friday and be returned the following Friday. Please make sure your students fill them out and reflect on one book. Finally, I have sent home computer cards in the student's folder. We have had our first day using computers and having computer safety conversations. We worked through some glitches and I have had to reset all of the passwords for two of the accounts (read theory), and their gmail. I will be sending home new computer cards on Monday for the students to have at home so they can access the classroom website and log on to their different resources! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask! Have a wonderful weekend! Hello Room 108 Families!!
What a wonderful first week of school we had! It was a pleasure meeting all of you on Tuesday for Open House. As always, please feel free to email me or call if you have any questions please let me know. The students did a wonderful job during their first MAP test in reading. As a reminder we will be doing the math MAP test this Wednesday. In reading we began learning about different reading strategies, such as rereading, retelling, summarizing and does it make sense (does the word sound right in the sentence if not going back and sounding it out a different way). In math we began looking at place value. We started mapping out our writing using our tiny topic notebooks! Finally we ended with a fantastic exploration day learning origami, computer coding, building, team sports and more! Next week we will be continuing in place value, we will start our science unit looking at solids and liquids! We will also really beginning writing our small moments, narrative, stories! I hope you have a wonderful long weekend and looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday! Thank you for a great start to the school year!! |
